Human Connection
Bringing the Human Hand Back Into Design
Fire & Gold is a type house rooted in tradition, craft, and the belief that letterforms carry meaning beyond words.
As a fourth-generation letterer, calligrapher, sign painter, and gold gilder, I grew up hearing stories of how my great-grandfather and grandfather approached their work—slowly, deliberately, and with care for both the craft and the people who encountered it.
What has been passed down is simple but enduring: the value of human connection, the power of a pencil, and a lifelong devotion to making things well.
In an era increasingly shaped by automation and speed, Fire & Gold exists as a counterpoint—an intentional studio practice centered on authorship, process, and the tactile nature of lettering.

The Power of a Pencil
Old-World Technique, Modern Tools
Every Fire & Gold design begins by hand.
Letterforms are first drawn with pencil and paper, following the same foundational methods used by Alva Cobler in the early 20th century. Only after the structure and rhythm of the letters are resolved is the computer introduced—as a tool for refinement, not generation.
This process preserves irregularity, character, and human nuance—qualities that cannot be automated.

A Studio Practice
Letters in Practice
At Fire & Gold, letterforms move beyond the page.
What begins as a drawn study becomes pattern, repetition, structure—developed into collections that live across paper, fabric, and object.
Each release is an authored body of work, designed, refined, and published by the studio.
